It's no good moaning! Knowing that you don't like them, may make them more appealing. Generation gap and all that...

Find a good angle
Use what you might consider to be bad points about the dolls, to be constructive input in perhaps unexpected ways. Knitting for dolls adds extra dimensions to the whole experience of play... called Maths and Sociology.

Counting stitches and measuring rows are surpassed by additional skills:
spacial awareness
appreciation of planning
costing materials
aspects of designing
social expectations
marketing expectations
peer pressure verses individual thought
etc...
And all added by a pair of knitting needles and a ball of yarn!

Whether children knit the clothing or just play with it, the experience is enlightening. They need a normal, macho, male doll. It seems that all these types of toys are monsters or aliens or the like. The games involved will all be fiction / Sci-fi / etc.

Real-life play
There is a lot of fighting these days, but this is real-life. The soldier leaves family and friends at home, and experiences mental and physical pain. On leave at home, they wear civilian clothes. They go shopping in supermarkets and let their hair down at  parties. Normal, socially acceptable behaviour...
